Shopify to Shopify Plus: When the Upgrade Is Worth It

Work out whether Shopify Plus solves a specific problem for your store, from checkout requirements and B2B to expansion stores and team access.

Before looking at the Plus price, write down what your current Shopify plan stops you from doing.

Perhaps wholesale customers need their own catalogs and payment terms. Perhaps checkout needs fields that aren’t available on your plan. Or perhaps the main problem is a slow theme, which a plan upgrade won’t fix by itself.

Plus is easier to evaluate when there’s a specific requirement to compare against the extra cost.

Check the features your store needs

Checkout control

Checkout is often the first feature to investigate. On standard plans, you can brand the checkout and apps can customize the thank you and order status pages. On Plus, apps can also customize the information, shipping, and payment steps, and you get the Checkout Branding API.

In practice that means delivery date pickers, custom fields, address validation, loyalty redemption, and business-specific rules inside the steps where customers commit.

B2B on Shopify

Shopify lists B2B among the Plus features: company accounts, customer-specific catalogs and price lists, payment terms, and wholesale ordering in the same admin as your direct-to-consumer store. If you currently run wholesale through a separate store, spreadsheets, or email orders, this is often the single strongest reason to upgrade.

Expansion stores

The Plus platform fee includes additional stores under the same brand. Shopify’s Plus pricing page lists the main store plus nine expansion stores. Brands use them for regional storefronts, staging environments, or separate wholesale operations.

Before you plan around expansion stores for international selling, check whether Shopify Markets inside a single store already covers your needs. If one store can handle the requirements, it may save your team from maintaining duplicate content and catalogs.

Automation and operations

Plus adds deeper automation options and more control for larger teams, including staff permissions and organization-level settings across stores.

You don’t need Plus just to use Shopify Flow. Shopify lists Flow as free on Basic, Grow, Advanced, and Plus, with some actions and limits that vary by plan. If automation is your main reason to upgrade, check what your current plan already allows first.

Pricing and fees

Plus pricing works differently from the standard plans. It’s a monthly platform fee on a one-year or three-year term, and Shopify notes that more complex, higher-volume businesses move to a variable platform fee based on revenue and business model. If you use a third-party payment provider instead of Shopify Payments, Plus charges a 0.2% fee on those transactions.

Check the current figures on Shopify’s Plus pricing page for your region. The plan fee is only one line in the budget. Implementation, apps, and the team that runs the store usually matter more.

Reasons to price the upgrade

You’re likely ready for Plus if one or more of these is true:

  • Your checkout needs logic, not just branding. Delivery scheduling, custom validation, B2B fields, or rules your business depends on.
  • Wholesale is a real channel. You run B2B orders through workarounds and the workarounds are costing staff time or accuracy.
  • You operate multiple storefronts. Separate regions, brands within one company, or separate wholesale and retail stores that need shared governance.
  • Your team has outgrown the admin. More staff, more permissions, more approvals, and a need for organization-level control.
  • The fee math has flipped. At higher volumes, the fee structure and payment rates can make Plus comparable in total cost. Run the numbers with your own transaction data.

Reasons to wait

  • The main problem is speed, conversion, or design. Plus won’t fix those. A better theme or a focused speed and conversion project will.
  • You want Plus for features that are now available on your current plan.
  • Nobody on the team has time to use what Plus unlocks. Capabilities you don’t implement are just a higher bill.
  • The checkout is underperforming, but the drop-off is actually in the cart. Our checkout optimization guide shows how to tell the difference.

How the upgrade itself works

Moving from a standard plan to Plus is a plan change on the same store, not a migration. Products, customers, orders and the theme remain in the same store. The larger project is usually implementing and testing the capabilities you upgraded for.

The real work is what you do with Plus once you have it:

  1. Write down the constraint. Name the specific capability you need and the business problem it solves.
  2. Inventory what changes. Checkout customizations, B2B setup, apps that can be replaced by native features, and any Shopify Scripts or legacy checkout code that need to move to current extensibility.
  3. Plan the implementation in order. Ship the capability that justified the upgrade first. Everything else can follow.
  4. Train the team. B2B, permissions, and automation only pay off if the people running the store use them.

Plus is not the same as headless

Plus is sometimes bundled into the headless conversation, but they’re separate decisions. Most Plus stores run a standard Shopify theme, and that’s usually the right call. If you’re weighing both, our comparison of headless Shopify cost versus Shopify Plus walks through when each one earns its complexity.

Price the first useful change

Choose the feature that would make a real difference to the business, then price the plan, implementation and ongoing work together. Give someone responsibility for using it after launch.

Our Shopify Plus development work starts with that first useful change. It gives the project a clearer purpose than upgrading now and looking for uses later.
